Press Releases

Big Lottery Grant

Release date: June 13th  2007

Domestic abuse experienced by women is an enormous problem within the Bradford district. Every month there are 815 cases of domestic abuse recorded by the police and other agencies offering support to women experiencing domestic abuse in the Bradford area (Domestic Abuse Monitoring Project may 2007). Bradford Women’s Aid works alongside many other organisations both statutory and voluntary to combat the problem of domestic abuse in Bradford.

Bradford Women’s Aid was set up as a grassroots organisation by local women activists determined to provide help for women experiencing domestic violence. The project started off with a small refuge but now well into its 21st year provides services for 300 women and children each year through the provision of refuge, resettlement, and outreach services.

All at Bradford Women’s Aid were delighted with the news of our successful bid to the Big Lottery. The bid will enable the creation of several new posts within our refuge, resettlement and outreach services  which will mean that support and  assistance can be provided for up to 400 additional women and children (over a 3 year period) who have experienced domestic abuse, including some specialist language and cultural support for Asian women living in refuge accommodation. This represents a 44 % increase in our overall service provision per year.

New posts will include a full time Team Leader for the Outreach and Resettlement Services, a part time Asian Refuge Worker and a part time Resettlement Worker.  Some Refuge Team Leader hours will be offered as an enhancement internally.

The bid will also cover shortfalls in the funding that we receive from Bradford Council which means that the posts of finance, admin, volunteer co-ordinator and outreach worker are fully funded for the year ahead and there is provision for those and other shortfalls in the subsequent 2 years. Overall the bid impacts on 11 posts at Bradford Women’s Aid.

This Big Lottery funding is an enormous boost to the project which has in recent years been struggling to keep up with the demand for services with a team largely made up of part-time staff.

Bradford Women’s Aid is an organisation with a feminist ethos and is looking for people with skills in voluntary sector management and accounting to complement an expanding and developing Management Committee. At present membership is open to women only. Any woman needing support can contact Outreach on 01274 666241.
